Colostrum Supplements Knowledge Base
Are bovine colostrum supplements safe to take during pregnancy and/or lactation? Please advise regarding the benefits and risks of this supplement. I've only heard about it on the market for the last few years, but was it in use before this? What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking it in powdered form versus raw liquid? Thank you! And, I've heard that dried colostrum that has been dried by using heat destroys many of the health benefits. But, what about when you take the raw, unpasteurized colostrum (like, the straight from the cow kind--but bottled). Can you heat that up and drink it warm?
Anyone heard of giving Colostrum as supplement? As we are trying to fix my daughters digestive and intestinal problems we came across a remedy commonly used to treat it...Colostrum. They actually get it from cows and it has the same make up with slightly higher vitamins than our colostrum. While it may sound a little weird to give my two year old drops of this, has anyone ever used it on a toddler or heard about it. Just want to make sure it's a legit (I researched the company as well as was referred to it and everything seems fine) supplement before I start using it.

how do i take care of an orphaned baby goat? His mother will not take him and i have cleaned him up and am feeding him a colostrum supplement every two hours, what else can i do? Do goats have to stimulate their offspring to defecate?
Anyone know if vitamins/supplements/antioxidants interfere with radiation therapy? I recently finished radiation therapy to the brain for a small cell tumor (5cm/5cm, left hemisphere) and I wish to fight it w/ other options as well. Will vitamins reduce to effectiveness of the radiation delivered to my brain? What about anti-oxidants like Flaxseed, grapeseed extract, selenium(which I'm told is a particularly potent free radical scavenger), and others? What about Taurine and Colostrum which are said to be respectively protective of the brain and promote healing? Would those lessen the effects of the radiation treatment? I keep getting differring responses from my oncologist, radiotherapist, neurosurgeon and my pharmacist!! Very confusing. Any help, answers or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! S/he who takes the time and energy to help as much as possible will be rewarded with a "best answer" rating and my everlasting gratitude! I know it isn't much, but it's all I have to give. Thanks a lot, everyone! Steve
milk/colostrum question? Ok this is my second baby, although the first was over four years ago. I never got colostrum or milk before she was born and een then we had to supplement for a little over a week because I wasnt getting any to come in, well I am now in my 32nd week and last night (sorry if tmi although i doubt on a pregnancy website there is ever really tmi) my hubby was getting a bit frisky and grabbed my breast, not hard or anything at all (trust me they are tender i would tell him) and milk, white milk, shot out at his face, I laughed of course... now I had colostrum early this time, the golden yellow sort of clear discharge, but MILK already, it isnt clear it is an off white and watery but not colostrum, i have had preterm labor, contractions with dilation, had to be iven trebutaline? please tell me this is NOT a sign of labor in the next few weeks, also she had dropped tremendously in the past week, i now have 4 inches between my breasts and my baby bump. hahah good to know... It just came up so fast and squirted literally 3 feet... Thanks ladies!
Should adults take a Colostrom supplement? I was told that taking probiotics like acidophilus wouldn't be very beneficial because you need Colostrum in your gut for them to live and grow. Otherwise the healthy bacteria you take will just die. Has anyone heard of this or have any wisdom on this?
Need help bottle feeding a foal, anyone know any tricks that work? He is a day 1/2 old, mom developed mastitis and is not producing hardly any milk... he did get colostrum in a sufficient amount (tested this am by vet) but not enough milk to make it on her own feeding him. I am supposed to be bottle feeding him as a supplement diet but he's fighting me every time, it's tough to even get 4 ounces down him. Anyone have any tricks to get this little guy to eat, I'm rapidly getting exhausted and so is he! HELP!
breastfeeding question? I had my baby Fri & it is now Tue. I have been pumping & storing the milk in the fridge. There is NO layer of fat at the top. The milk is still yellow, yet not clearish like colostrum. Baby was supplementing w/ liquid formula at the hospital. We took her home yesterday & all that evening and night have been just giving her the breast milk. She was really quiet at the hospital. With only giving her the breast milk, she has been crying almost all night. She has also been hungry all night..So I told my husband to give her a bottle of the Similac, and she ate it & went right to sleep. No crying..What is the reason for this? I had a c-section with her, could this be why my milk is lacking the fat? With my last baby I had a vaginal birth and I had white milk that had fat on top when I put it in the fridge.

Does milk come in regardless of breastfeeding? Could you please tell me if there's less of a chance of milk coming in if you bottlefeed from birth, or if you milk supply is smaller if you don't breastfeed at all? I'm not yet pregnant, but am positive that I will not be a breastfeeding mother. I breastfed my first child for 6 months and we (daughter and I) were miserable until I supplemented. I was considering giving colostrum in the hospital since it would be very short term, but I don't want to if it will increase my milk supply. I respect everyone's right to breastfeed anywhere in public into toddlerhood, but do not feel that it make for a better mother nor child. I have read the Kelly Mom information, as well as Dr. Sears, Dr. Newman, and various other breastfeeding experts. I believe formula to be a perfectly acceptable substitute for breastmilk, whose benefits are marginal at best for most babies. Thanks for all answers. I didn't phrase my questions too well apparently. I was asking if not breastfeeding would at all help diminish the possiblity of my milk coming in, or diminish the supply. Or, I cud just bee stuped caus my momma fomleah fed me.
Breastfeeding help?!? My 4 day old son is hungry all the time (he only weighs 6 lbs.) and I am not making enough milk for him..I wasn't making enough colostrum either, so I've been supplementing with formula since day 2. I just got my milk in today, but it's not free flowing & my boobs aren't even noticeably bigger. my son is getting jaundice and went from 6lb.8oz. to 6lb.1oz. and I am supplementing with formula which i HATE doing & I just started pumping today but only got 1/2 an oz. altogether.. he is eating 15 minutes on each breast plus 2 oz. of formula every 2-3 hours... Since the formula I am giving him has iron, he is constipated, hasn't had a BM in 2 days, and gassy and fussy and i am so frustrated here just waiting on a FULL MILK SUPPLY!!! I am pumping now because my nipples are already dry, cracked & hurt like nothing else... on top of that, I had to have a c-section and have no help with my son so I have been constantly up & on the go since we got home from the hospital yesterday afternoon...
breastfeeding moms whose milk came in late? My baby is 7 months now. I am asking this so that I know what to do with my second child. I had a c-section and I breastfed immediately. In the hospital I was such a proud mom b/c he had no problems latching on - I had heard this was the hardest part about breastfeeding. Anyway, after 2 days, my baby had lost more than 10% of his body weight. I was, of course frantic-only colostrum (sp?) was coming out. Hence, I supplemented with formula. Anyway, I kept breastfeeding and supplementing with formula for 3 months. Also,I was pumping with "in style medela" every day for 3 months and only getting 2 ounces per each 20-30 minute sitting (UGH). Anyway, I eventually just stopped because I was so depressed after each "feeding" seeing him still hungry. Here is my question, for anyone whose milk came in late or were in a similar situation as me initially, how did you get your body to produce more milk?
Producing brestmilk again after 'running dry' 5 months ago? My 6 month old stayed in hospital for a while immediately after birth, due to a medical condition. I was unable to breastfeed her, so I pumped breastmilk for her for a month after birth, before running dry (even though I was on extra hormone supplements). She only returned home into my care two weeks ago. For the last two weeks, I have had an increasing daily pain in my breasts, for which I found no explanation until yesterday. I noticed last night that I seem to have noticeably increased some sort of liquid production in my breasts - maybe colostrum? Is there any chance that I could possibly pick-up my milk supply again, and start breastfeeding her (instead of giving her that nasty formula anymore)?
Having trouble producing enough milk for my baby.? Initially I planned on exclusively breastfeeding but my milk didn't come in for five days and the colostrum wasn't enough for her. She lost too much weight and had jaundice bad enough that they were going to admit her to the hospital if I didn't supplement with formula to get her weight up and jaundice alleviated. Since then I have been giving her the breast first and then formula, but no matter what I do (pumping frequently, etc.) I can't seem to make more than two or three ounces (the most in the morning). I've been to a lactation consultant, didn't really help, and I've tried relaxing and getting comfortable, but that doesn't really change the amount I make either. And now my baby won't latch for more than a few minutes because she has gotten used to bottles and gets frustrated with nursing from the breast. I want to keep breastfeeding because I hate all the issues that formula is giving her (constipation, gassiness, etc.) but don't know what to do to increase my supply.
Breast milk is making baby sick. Baby will not sleep.? I have a one week old son, first time mother. I was not producing enough colostrum at first to feed him so i had to supplement w/ Similac Advance. For about 4 days I had been feeding him that. Now, he refuses to take my breast. Well I pumped a bottle and he took it all but spit it back up not projectile but it was very thick. Also, the milk was very yellow. He kept trying to feed even after I had given him ab 3 oz. but kept spitting it up. He kept me up from 12 til 5 in the morning. Finally, i fed him the formula and he went to sleep. Is he not getting enough? Any idea why he would be doing this? Should i continue to try or keep to the formula. I dont want to continue if its just going to keep making him sick so he cant sleep even though i know how good breast milk is. Any opinions, facts, experinces would be great. also. he has bad jaundice. i currently have him under a bili light to try and get rid of it. He urinates a lot but does not have many stools and when he does they are still tarry and thick black and its not much. Any ideas?
questions about breastfeeding and pregnancy.? My daughter is 6 months old. I might be pregnant, havn't taken the test yet... however if I am pregnant I want to keep nursing my 6 month old.. so here are my questions.. first... can I do that? will it cause problems during pregnancy? will I have to wean her before the other child is born? when will the colostrum come in for the newborn, and how do I not give my daughter that milk, and only the newborn? do I get the newborn first dibs? I dont want to have to wean at all... so when the newborn is born how do I just give the newborn the colostrum that he/she needs, but still feed my daughter.. can she drink the colostrum? and finally, when i produce the colostrum.. even if I can give it to my daughter after the newborn has first dibs on it.. it isn't enough to fill her up so will I have to supplement with frozen breast milk that I have saved up? so many questions... sorry!
Raising newborn English Bulldog puppies PLEASE HELP!!!!? Hi! My English Bulldog had puppies yesterday, and unlike most bullies, she is actually nursing her pups, which leads to my questions. I know they are getting colostrum right now, but how long does it take for the milk to come in? I am supplementing them with puppy milk (just a small amount) after each feeding to make sure they are actually getting milk. One other question, she favors letting them nurse on one side. Should I try to force her to let them suckle on the other side every other feeding? She had 5 pups and has 10 nipples. I have raised other litters before, but this is the first time one of my girls has nursed, and I really want to do everything right. Thanks!! Oh, and please don't leave any negative remarks about breeding. I am very dedicated to my dogs and pups. I even take back puppies if the circumstances change for the new family. I also do bulldog rescues. These dogs have never been about the money for me. Thanks again!
Am I producing enough milk? I gave birth 6 days ago. I have had trouble with my milk coming in. My baby lost over a pound and started developing jaundice so I had to supplement with formula (docs orders). Now, he refuses to nurse (pushes away my breast, cries, kicks). I try about 45 minutes to get him to nurse, and then give him a bottle (now mostly pumped breast milk, some formula). I am only getting an ounce at one sitting though (1/2 out of each breast) and pump for about 20 minutes at a time. It still has a yellow tint also. Is this colostrum mixed with milk? I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to produce enough milk, but I am trying my best. It is very disappointing for me and I know frustrating for him as well. Is it safe to be mixing formula and breastmilk like this? It seems to be agreeing with him. I don't know what to do. Scared first time mommy. Thank you in advance.
Two week old puppies? We've recently acquired 6, 2 week old english bull terrier puppies because the mother refused to nurse them. They got the mother's colostrum by muzzling her and holding her down to nurse, but after that, they were given to us. We've been nursing them with raw organic goat milk and they've been doing great. Luckily, we have an unspayed female of the same breed who has had a litter in the past (Not recently). She's been caring for the litter, cleaning them and sleeping with them and all that. A couple days ago, she actually started lactating, she's not near a heat and its been a year and a half since her last litter. The vet has already confirmed that its safe for them to nurse off her as long as we keep supplementing them with the goat's milk. How can I ensure that she'll start weening the puppies off at the appropriate time without keeping them separated?I'm worried that because she didn't whelp them that she'll neglect to ween and I don't want to completely separate them if possible. Crystal -- We used that recipe and it caused the puppies to bloat. We get our goats milk right from the goat, which is fed organically with no added hormones or antibiotics, and there is no reason to add anything to it. Its used on human babies and we've had great success with it on the puppies as well. It was only when we added ingredients that they got sick. But thanks : )
Think I can still nurse this time? I tried to nurse my daughter. I thought she was getting enough because she nursed all the time, Probably every hour. I couldn't tell how much she was getting, but I ended up taking her to a specialist (don't remember what kind) We thought she was constipated for long periods or something because she wasn't having many dirty diapers. Well, ended up after I started supplementing a little bit she gained a ton of weight and had regular bowel movements. Seems that I was starving her without knowing it. I felt soooo bad. I've never forgiven myself for that. She is now 7 and healthy even though she still has her long bird legs. lol. I'm now pregnant again and of course I want to try to nurse this one. Is there a chance I can still do it? I know more about what to look for and consider myself older and more educated on the subject. Is there hope? I'm 20 weeks but not producing the colostrum. Even though I feel tingling in my nipples from time to time. Thanks for you help.
My daughter was in NICU for a week and I think my milk dried up! Help?? My daughter had the cord wrapped around her neck and inhaled fluid upon birth. She stayed in the NICU for almost a week and I stayed with her (courtesy stay at hospital). I did not get to take her right to breast but I did use the medela and pumped every two hours and tried to get her to feed every three hours and supplemented with formula because the NICU told me to when I went down to feed her. On day 3 and 4 I got approx 50ml of colostrum. On days 5,6,7 and now 8 I have gotten NOTHING. She was latching on great but never got anything directly from me and would fuss so much it would make her stats go wacky. Now my breast hurt so bad that I can hardly hold her. The nutritionists have not gotten back to me STILL! She takes to the formula very well but I was so determined to breast feed. What happened? Anyone have this happen? Should I stop?
Breastfeeding question? I had a baby yesterday. He is quite the eater and I want to breastfeed, but he's not getting satisfied with the colostrum. He will cry after feeding for about half an hour. I'm supplementing him with formula, but I'm scared when my milk comes in that he won't want breastmilk anymore. How long will it take for my breastmilk to come in? What did they do in the old days to satisfy the baby's hunger?
Breastfeeding question? I'm 22 weeks pregnant right now and I really want to strictly breastfeed my baby when he is born but have a few questions..bare with me, it is my first time! 1.Does the hospital Make you feed your baby formula to "top the baby off" after feeding colostrum? 2.Does the baby get full from the colostrum alone? Whenever I watch a baby show on TV it seems like the doctors always tell the mother to supplement with formula...I really don't want this. Can somebody give me some insight? I hope my questions were clear enough! Thank you!
??s about lack of milk, breastfeeding, etc...? some ding a ling got my other account suspended- so i have to start all over! anyway, with my first pregnancy (my son was a preemie) i never had milk, but i began leaking colostrum type of fluid well before my son was delivered. i didn't have milk, i tried pumping, supplements both prescription and homeopathic, seeing a lactation consultant, and trying the sns (?) thinga magiggy. today i am 24 weeks pregnant, and have noticed i'm starting to leak quite a bit of the same colstrum type fluid as with my first pregnancy, my breast have not grown any again same as my first.... so i was wondering if i were to start pumping now, or something, would i have milk at birth? i know each pregnancy is different, but i was told that it is a good likelihood that i won't have milk (by both the doctor and a lactation consultant)-- i'm not going to get my panties in a wad if i can't breastfeed, but is there anything i can do now to try to get milk? by the way-- how much is it normal to leak before delivery? just wondering since there seems to be quite a bit leaking out.
