Is it wierd to have your breasts "pumped" by a lactation cunsultant at week 28 of pregnancy?

He said he wanted to check how well they were "working" if ,one "worked" better, and to check for the proper "fit" of the part that goes on the nipple...Obviously we only expressed a bit of colostrum...my sister in law is freaking out saying I should'nt have let that be done, because i could go into labor now...i figure he knows what he's doing....what do you all think?

  1. That sounds odd to me. I would say don't do it or have it done again. You'll find out if they "work" when the baby is born. Nipple stimulation has been known to cause contractions and start labor. I would seriously avoid it. Congrats on the baby and good luck!
  2. That is the wierdest thing I have ever heard. I would talk to his superior and make sure what he did is ok? And yes, nipple stimulation is a way to self induce labor.
  3. I know even slight nipple stimulation can induce labor, i mean he is a lactation consultant but you may want to tell your doctor and double check, because it really is to soon for that, he should have fit you for the pump and took a look at production after you have the babies, not only that i don't think they can really tell much about your production right now as its not actual milk and some woman don't even leak colustrum until the child is born....sounds strange to me but make sure you tell your primary doctor..
  4. To be honest, it sounds to me like the dude wanted to cop a feel. Talk to his supervisor, and tell him/her that you want somebody ELSE to work with you.
  5. Your sister-in-law is correct. Pumping your breast when you are pregnant can cause you to have contractions. Midwives will actually have a woman pump her breast to get her to go into labor when she is past her due date. I do not know why the lactation consultant did that - it sounds very odd to me.
  6. Not to be rude and crude, but it sounds like he might've been trying to get his jolly's out ouf the incident. I can tell you from personal experience. When my wife went in to have our daughter, they had trouble getting her labor to start even using the pitocin drip. Her gyne told us to close the door and for me to stimulate her that way and within 30 minutes she had begun active labor.
  7. NO that sounds wrong i would report this .... mine only helped me when i gave birth NOT before.... she showed me how to get the baby to latch on and how to use a pump correctly what your saying sounds super wrong and it sounds more like the doctor was having fun....:( id report him before more women are touched inappropriately b/c what milk milk isn't even there yet....... and no one can tell if they work properly till afterwards... id report this.
  8. Umm, ya thats the wierdest thing Ive ever heard, youre lucky you didnt go into labor! And what kind of lactation consultant "checks to see if they work" at 28 weeks?! I would definitly call the office and report him! and definitly get a new LC!
