Has anyone's baby ever just hated powder formula?

My daughter was born with the cord wrapped around her neck and needed to be in the NICU for a few days for observation because she inhaled some amniotic fluid. They gave her Similac ready to feed (even though I told them to let me try and breast feed first!) :( So for the first 6 days she had ready to feed and my colostrum (milk dried up). I bought a bunch of powder kind and she was so fussy and kept spitting it up. I happen to have a ready to feed from the hospital and she sucked it down and was fine. I asked her doctor and she said she never heard of a baby HAVING to have the ready to feed as oppose to the powder or concentrated. I have tried all three kind on her and she refuses anything but the ready to feed. We even mixed 1 oz powder and 3 oz ready to feed and she KNEW we had tricked her and she screamed. We threw out the huge can we bought and bought her all ready to feed and she has been fine. Has anyone else ever had a baby do this? We even had her doctor mix it for us... because we thought maybe we were doing it wrong. She screamed bloody murder at that too. Her doctor looked puzzled and said "If she wont take the powder, the ready to feed is more expensive, but of course give her that". We do not care about the money, we have plenty and our baby's needs come first. I am just puzzled at why this could have happened? Any ideas? Oh and we tried different temps and everything. (Oh and before you say anything, yes, I tried re lactating for a week before my doctor made me stop because of the new meds I am on for a condition I have). :( So she has her ready to feed and she is happy! :)

  1. When my daughter was born, she literally could not ingest any type of formula, powder or canned, no matter what the brand. Our pediatrician tried every brand and type. My baby either spit it up or she got terribly constipated. This sounds horrible but it's true: once she was so constipated that my husband literally had to pull a piece of poo out of her little butt that she was barely able to push out because she was constipated. She was miserable. Finally, her doctor said to put her on Pet Milk with dark Karo Syrup. Finally, after weeks of her having pain of constipation and getting sick from "brand formulas", the old fashioned Pet milk did it. It was healthy, tasted a little sweet from the Karo syrup and I was able to keep her on it until she went to pasteurized milk. I'm afraid I don't remember how many parts Pet milk and parts water to parts of dark Karo, but if you're interested in trying this, you could check with her doctor. It was much less expensive, yet still good for her. And no, the semi-sweet taste did not spoil her from drinking regular milk when the time came because by that time, she had long been eating baby food and she did drink plain water from her bottle and her juices.
  2. Yes, this happened to me too. He wouldnt take any powdered formula at all at first. I had to get the Similac pre-made containers for him too. I just recently tried to switch him to the powdered stuff, I give him 2 bottles with powdered and 2 bottles premade everyday. (He's 6 months now) Seems to be adjusting well so far.
  3. Sometimes babies don't like the powdered formula because it isn't as thick as the ready made stuff. Try making a bit of the powder (if you have some on hand), and putting it in the fridge letting it thicken up a bit then try to feed that to baby. Warm it up a bit first of course. She might have reflux (talk to your ped) and that is why she likes the ready made b/c that is easier to stay in her belly. My daughter was like this and now she is on enfamil AR powder and does great. Best of luck to you!
  4. Have you ever actually tasted formula? It tastes like sour milk. No wonder.
