How can I boost my puppy's immune system?

My puppy (6mos old) has been struggling to fight of demodectic mites for a few months now. The Vet keeps prescribing medication to kill the mites - which isn't working and has negative side effects. I need a way to boost my puppy's immune system so he can fight them off on his own. -And please don't refer me to any dry, commercial dog foods - I know that doesn't work.

  1. Make sure you are feeding it a good quality, high protein dog food. Also, liquid vitamins for human infants will not hurt the puppy. Check with your vet, of course. Some breeds have peculiarities. But in general these measures should prove adequate. Depending on your breed or type of dog, switch to an adult food after twelve months. Work it in gradually. Make sure it is good quality. We have raised dogs and like Buckeye (from Buckeye mill in Dalton, OH), Wayne, and Purina.

  3. Immune system Boosting dogs immune system Boosting the immune system for proper working biochemical interactions is important to your dogs wellness. The immune system is persistently protecting the body from parasites, bacterial, fungal, or virus-infected cells. Boosting your dogs immune system will help his body overwhelm bacteria, destroy toxins, or kill viruses. Iinfected cells produce interferon and other cytokines, which can signal contiguous uninfected cells to intensify their defenses, enabling them to damage invaders. In a weak immune system, bacteria, viruses, micro organisms, and toxins can pass the immune defending cells, and generate disorders. A lowered immune system function in dogs results in acute or chronic fungi, yeast infections, eczema, demodectic mange, food allergy, arthritis, ear infection, slowly healing wounds, or fertility disorders. Nutrient deficiency is an eminent cause of immune system deficiency in dogs. Animal researchers have recently demonstrated that nutrient deficiency in one generation can affect immune system function in later generations, even if they are not nutrient deficient. Thus, a poor nutrition or continuous feeding the wrong dog food diet weakens your dogs immune system. Boosting your dogs immune system: Balanced levels of trace elements, minerals, and vitamins are required to boost the immune system of your dogs to fight invading bacteria and viruses by itself. Raw food diet for dogs is necessary to boost the immune system, because stomach and metabolism of all carnivores is designed to digest raw foods. Commercial dog food is a nutritional burden that dogs digestive system is unable to cope with. The use of unnatural dry food, and over-processed, chemically enhanced commercial dog foods weakens your dogs immune system. Wild animals are not plagued by the disorders that afflict our domesticated dogs! To satisfy your dogs nutritional requirements and boost the immune system, all ingredients of wellness dog food have to be synergistic, meaning they should enhance each others effect as well as being able to work by themselves. If you are not sure about the nutritional values, and biochemical processes in the body, add a high-quality nutritional supplement to your dogs food which contains vitamin B complex, folic acid, vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, selenium, iodine, biotin, echinacea, and potassium. Neem The most important characteristic of Neem (neem tea, neem leaf) is, boosting both the lymphocyte and cell-mediated immune system. Vitamin C has essential antiviral and antibacterial activity, but its main effect is improvement of host resistance. Omega Fatty Acids Omega fatty acids are important for your dogs immune system, skin and coat health. Omega fatty acids boost food utilization and energy production. Evening primrose oil is most effective (omega 6 fatty acid), followed by flaxseed oil and fish oil (omega 3 fatty acid). Zinc Zinc deficiency increases the risk of infection. Studies show that zinc supplements can boost the immune system, promote wound healing, and help develop white blood cells. http://www.doggiesparadise.com/boost-immune-system.shtml There were other links in this article that had MORE detail to help you. BUT basically it's what you're feeding your baby. Think of him as a machine. The fuel you give him results in the output he produces. You put in crap you're going to get crap - including his ability to fight off illness. Look into any kind of Premium Dog food. (No by products, no Corn etc) do some research - Natural Balance, INova, Nutro. Look at the lables and ingrediants. Good Luck
  4. A well balanced diet is the best way to promote and maintain a healthy immune system. Also reduce stress in your pups life...if the meds the vet has your pup on is Mitoban-stop using it now! Mitoban does more harm than good. Try adding supplements like fish oil capsules,Missing Link ,plain yogurt to your dogs diet.Mites live in all dogs systems. It's when their system gets stressed that the balance becomes unhealthy and d-mange appears. Good luck
  5. Is it being treated with ivermectin . That usually works in just a few weeks. Rescue remedy from the health food store helps too. Demodex can reoccur and can often be brought on in times of stress. Try to keep things calm and routine.
  6. The diet that he was designed to eat, raw prey model, is the best way to boost his immune system. He extracts the most nutrients from foods that his body breaks down quickly and efficiently. Commercial dog foods are full of undigestible crap that slows the food down in the digestive tract, allowing bacteria to colonize, and taxing the dog's immune system. An ideal diet for a dog is 10% organs 70% meat 20% bones and connective tissue. This will also keep his teeth sparkling clean for years and years.
  7. It does take a long time to get rid of this. Ivermectin oral is good from the vet. They do have natural dog immune system vitamins you can get on line. Natural of course. Stress can really effect the dog also.
