Think I can still nurse this time?

I tried to nurse my daughter. I thought she was getting enough because she nursed all the time, Probably every hour. I couldn't tell how much she was getting, but I ended up taking her to a specialist (don't remember what kind) We thought she was constipated for long periods or something because she wasn't having many dirty diapers. Well, ended up after I started supplementing a little bit she gained a ton of weight and had regular bowel movements. Seems that I was starving her without knowing it. I felt soooo bad. I've never forgiven myself for that. She is now 7 and healthy even though she still has her long bird legs. lol. I'm now pregnant again and of course I want to try to nurse this one. Is there a chance I can still do it? I know more about what to look for and consider myself older and more educated on the subject. Is there hope? I'm 20 weeks but not producing the colostrum. Even though I feel tingling in my nipples from time to time. Thanks for you help.

  1. Absolutely, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to. Make sure you get some support behind you. Maybe start visiting your local La Leche League, get into contact with a certified lactation consultant, have knowledge on your side and a positive attitude!
  2. I definitely think you should give it a try. Did you see a lactation specialist last time? It's normal for breastfed babies to go up to 7 days without a bowel movement. Also, as for the colostrum issue, I didn't have any colostrum until after my baby was born, so 20 weeks is still really early. If you have access to a lactation consultant, I would utilize that. They can give you valuable advice and confirm that your baby is getting enough to eat. There's also a great website called www.kellymom.com. It has a lot of information about breastfeeding.
  3. go for it... and maybe you can try to pump when you get you milk in so you produce more. and there is no shame in bottle feeding and breast feeding, I had to do it because my daughter didn't get enough.
