What happens if a baby inside a pregnant woman has a reaction to the mother's immune system?

What if the baby, for some reason, isn't protected from the mother's immune system as it normally would be. Would the baby or the mother be negatively affected? How? Has this occurred before?

  1. There is something similar to that which is the rh factor. Some women are rh+ which means there blood will fight the babies blood and kill the baby. This is very treatable and there are many women that have it. Other than that I have never heard of the mothers immune system fighting the baby. Unless she is really really sick and her body just cant withstand the pregnancy. Then she would miscarry...Good luck
  2. The mother's body starts rejecting the pregnancy. Internal organs such as the liver and kidneys start failing. Also, the blood stops producing platelets. Sometimes the mother has to receive platelets. The mother's blood pressure wil skyrocket, and the babies heart rate will fail. Then the placenta will start to detach causing the mother to bleed.
  3. This happens with some people and it is called eclampsia. Very serious issue.
  4. Actually the body is naturally inclined to do this, which is why the immune system is repressed during pregnancy. A baby is a foreign object in the woman’s body. The question you pose is possible. There are several reasons why this can happen.
